News and Events

Sylvan's tutors teach skills that last a lifetime. We help students learn how to become self-motivated and achieve independence; above all else, we enable them to approach school — and life — with confidence.

We also maintain Sylvan tutoring special offers and seasonal promotions that make getting your child on the road to success easier.

SAT Seminar

Did you know that independent research indicates that preparing for the SAT test also helps students prepare for the rigors of college writing? Did you also know that students can increase their scores on the SAT by 30 points simply by being exposed to a practice test? Our SAT program offers you multiple practice tests, in addition to 30 hours of class, in a class setting of 8 or fewer students. Please call to schedule your initial testing and consultation. Have 3 friends interested? We'll set up a seminar just for you!

Advanced Reading Skills

This wonderful class is a short "speed reading" seminar that we are offering to students in 7th grade and up. In this course, kids learn to increase their reading speed while maintaining or increasing their comprehension. This 12 hour class has between 3 and 6 students. Give us a call to get started!

Brain Freeze-How to Beat the Wintertime School Blues

“Students can suffer ‘Brain Freeze’ and lose academic proficiency during winter break, which could prove troublesome when returning back to school,” said Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D. and vice president of Sylvan Learning Center. “Winter is an important time for parents to beat the school blues by making everyday, learning activities fun in order to enhance math, reading, writing, and study skills.”
Here are tips to help your children beat the winter, back-to-school blues and help motivate them in the new year:
• Invite your child to participate in cooking or shopping to strengthen his math skills.
• Encourage your child to choose a classmate with whom he can study and swap reading books.
• Create study plans. Have your child do her most challenging assignment first, while she is most focused, then have her work on easier tasks. Finish each homework session with a fun activity.
• Set aside a specific time for homework and studying. Take advantage of this quiet “together time” by sitting with your child and working on your paperwork. This visually demonstrates the importance of "work time" to your child.
• If homework was a struggle during the first half of the school year, set up a reward system for this semester. For example, deposit change in a small jar when homework is complete. As soon as the jar is full, treat the whole family to something everyone will enjoy.
• Have family reading time at least once a week. Utilize Book Adventure, a free Sylvan-created, interactive, reading motivation tool
that is available online at
www.bookadventure.com. Students choose their own books, take short comprehension quizzes and redeem their accumulated points for small prizes. Book Adventure also offers teacher and parent resources and tips to help children develop a lifelong love of reading.
• Refresh your child’s "study space." Shop with your child to buy new pencils, erasers and notebooks.

Middle School Success

Is your child "in a winter slump" when it comes to academic motivation and performance?
January is the perfect time to help your child get excited about learning in the second half of the school year.
Many students admit that they are reluctant to ask for assistance because they feel alone in their struggles. Students need someone who is patient to help them better understand - a parent, a teacher or a supplemental education provider.
JoAnna, a 14 year-old ninth grader in middle school, participated in Sylvan's Math Essentials program from October 2006 - August 2007. "When JoAnna began having problems with math in the beginning of middle school, my husband and I blamed moving to a new state for her academic trouble. We thought that she would be able to pull herself up, but, when she continued to struggle in 8th grade, we knew she need help." says Kimberly, JoAnna's mother.
Kimberly credits Sylvan for providing an academic foundation that has allowed her daughter to graduate from Sylvan's math course to the Study Skills program where she has learned how to become a better student by utilizing effective strategies in organization, note-taking, researching, using her personal learning style to study and learning how to approach taking tests without anxiety.
Sylvan's Study Skills instructors are trained and certified to emphasize skill and confidence building and understand that, when a student feels less stressed and more confident towards schoolwork, her interest increases. This allows the child to learn faster and more efficiently, and to retain more information with greater accuracy.
"The Sylvan experience has been successful for my daughter. Sylvan's personalized instruction filled in JoAnna's skill gaps and has allowed her to succeed in middle school while helping to build an academic foundation for high school success," adds Kimberly.
